Don't Cringe When You Say "Resolution"
Yes, it’s that time
again. The New Year is right around the corner, and
it comes with the expectation that we will have some
resolutions to go along with it. Ah-ah, I can see
you crinkling up your nose already. But before you
say, “I never stick with them, so I’m not making any
resolutions this year,” stop a minute and think.
A resolution is a
goal, what you hope to achieve in the end. Let’s say
you want to lose weight, build a new patio or spend
more time with your kids. To reach any of those
ends, you’ll be spending time and perhaps money. So
you need a budget. You’ll also want some milestones
along the way to judge your progress. And if anyone
else is going to be impacted by the pursuit of your
resolution, you want to get buy-in from them, too.
Hmm. Isn’t this starting to sound familiar?
When you come right
down to it, any resolution you can think of is a
project. So if you can manage projects at work, then
you can certainly manage your own personal projects
to help you reach those resolution goals.
This year, instead of avoiding New Year resolutions,
determine which ones are most important to you and
then put your project plan into action. Bring your
Project Management skills home from work with you
and see what you can accomplish in 2008.
