The Magic of Value

For many of you, it's a magical moment when you earn your PMP® certification. Fortunately, once the magic wears off, you're still holding a certification that's highly valued in the business world -- and it won't disappear.

Certification Magazine reported that those 3 letters -- PMP -- can mean an extra $10,000 in salary, bigger promotions and more job security for you.

In 2007, the Project Management Institute reported the median salary in the United States for PMPs was $100,000, while those without the certification earned only $89,000. The best news is that the PMP credential is still growing, with only 135,309 credential holders at the end of 2007.

Why are PMPs in such demand? Because when everyone in an organization is working from the same playbook, you're more effective -- saving money and time. If a handful of people are following the same project management standards, you might see some improvement. But with PMPs throughout your organization all following the same procedures, the results are almost -- magical.

Your PMP has given you the skills to lead and the opportunity to encourage others to strive for the same goal you've achieved. Once you have those three letters after your name, be sure to get the most from them. Read this month's Know How Network and this issue's Avoiding Post-PMP® Syndrome article for more tips on doing just that.
