Find the Right Spot

You’d love to volunteer but aren’t sure what opportunities are available. Well, you might be surprised to find out just how many possibilities there are in your community. Reaching out to others to lend a hand is the quickest way to achieve your own goals, too.  And if you find yourself looking for work, volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door, keep your skills sharp, and do something constructive for others.

So let your first step be devoted to some basic research. It’s pretty easy to scan the web site of your town or a nearby city and find listings of community activities and organizations, many of which could use help even if they aren’t asking for it. But if you’d like to get more specifics about volunteer spots, check out some of these web sites.

VolunteerMatch --  Put in your zip code and search terms and VolunteerMatch will show you what matches. Go ahead and type in “project management” in the keyword search. You might be surprised at how many opportunities there are.

Volunteers of America – Scroll down the home page and click on the state you’re interested in. When that page displays, scroll to the bottom to see what volunteer positions are available.

1-800-Volunteer.org – Here you can also access a national database of volunteer opportunities by searching keywords and/or by location.

Your Project Management skills can open the door for you to help almost any non-profit organization while you spread your wings, meet new people, improve your skills and add to your own experience. Read this month’s Know How Network and this issue Pick a Non-Profit and Watch Yourself Growarticle for more tips on volunteering.
