The purpose of this course is to provide people who work on teams the knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to effectively and efficiently manage or contribute to teams while working on projects. This course is for ordinary people; that is, anyone who has to work with two or more people on any type or size project. You will learn basic project management techniques and the importance of including the team during planning, along with proper team member selection and role assignment. You'll learn the number one cause of project failures, how to reduce or eliminate the risk of conflict, and how to manage conflicts that do arise. You'll learn to recognize the importance of and opportunities for shared leadership, individual empowerment and choosing the right communication techniques which allow a team to reach a significant accomplishment in a short period of time.

We use the concepts of Choice Theory and Cheetah Communications (aka Non-Violent Communication Theory) and themes from Cheetah Negotiations to have you recognize individual needs and feelings and experience the effects of different choices and responses you make to situations you encounter during the simulation. Using basic Cheetah Project Management techniques as a life skill, you'll leave with an understanding of how to plan projects, select team members and assign roles, and keep teams on track while eliminating the ways you may contribute to conflict in a team. You'll learn techniques to significantly prevent or reduce conflict within your own groups, and methods to use to reduce conflict and to improve team selection and performance.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn basic Project Management techniques and importance of including teams in planning.

  • Learn how to best select team members and assign roles.

  • Learn how to reduce or eliminate sources of conflict and establish methods to diffuse contentious situations in teams.

  • Learn how shared leadership, individual empowerment and choosing the right communication techniques enhance team performance.

  • Apply theory to practice during the course and beyond.

Course Details

  • We teach this course onsite. We need approximately 200 square feet (10 feet by 20 feet) per four people to complete the simulation. Class size is limited by the size of the space we have to run the class. In our own training facilities, we limit class size to 12 people.

  • This course includes a pre-course online assessment to understand each participant's unique personality styles. During the course you learn how the mix of various personality styles amplifies and attenuates various situations that arise in teams. You learn how to minimize conflict based on the perception of "personality differences" and how to use group process tools to use these personality differences to dramatically improve team performance.

  • This is a hands-on course where you see how you and your team members respond and react in a group setting while completing a very significant project in a short period of time. You experience how to set up a project to eliminate the sources of conflict. While doing the simulation, you have opportunities for reflection and self-correction to understand your reactions, to test our various conflict resolution tactics, and to customize team management strategies that will work for you.

  • We are IACET Certified (you can earn CEUs with our course) and a PMI® R.E.P. (you can earn PDUs with our course).
