Project Kayak

Are you a Project Manager looking for a fun way to spend your summer? Are
you a PMP® who wants to earn PDUs at the same time? Don't think the two are
simultaneously possible?
Introducing one of Cheetah Planning's newest Online PDU courses, Project
Kayak.
Project Kayak is the ultimate in hands-on learning. The purpose of this course is to bring to life the Project Management phases and processes described in the Project Management Body of
Knowledge, or PMBOK®.
Using the Cheetah Project Management methodology, you will actually build your own kayak in under 40 hours, with access over a ten week period to the online content and the course instructor. The cost of the course includes a kit with all the components to build
your kayak. When you have finished, the fully-functioning kayak* is yours to keep and enjoy! And, if you're a
PMP®, you'll earn 60
PDUs -- that's all the PDUs you are required to earn over a 3-year period to maintain your PMP® status, and you can earn them all by completing just this course.
Here's what one of Cheetah's customers had to say about Project Kayak:
"An educational program such as this takes the vision and wisdom for which a company like Cheetah Planning is known. This is an original idea that allows
PMP®s an exceptional opportunity to improve their PMBOK® processes and learn valuable accelerated Project Management processes that can be applied to a wide range of projects. This course represents the extreme in fun and educational learning, all in the comfort of your own home. My hat is off to Michelle LaBrosse and the rest of her team for having the vision to create such a unique and valuable experience!"
--Jed Levine, PMP

What you eat and how you take care of your body significantly impacts your ability to quickly prepare for an exam. It also impacts your performance on the actual exam. There are a number of ways you can put your body and mind in peak performing states so that you can significantly reduce the time you need to study, while at the same time dramatically improving your performance on exams. Making sure you eat properly, exercise, and get adequate sleep is vitally important. And cutting out certain bad habits can also be key in determining how you perform on an exam. Before you even begin the study process, take a hard look at your lifestyle, and if you find anything that may be
detrimental to your peak performing state, try to cut it out of your life completely, at least until the exam is over and you've passed - with flying colors, of course!
Maximize Your Company Training Dollars
Are you planning on taking the Cheetah Accelerator Course for the PMP®?

Accelerated
Learning in everyday life
By Michelle A. LaBrosse, PMP
Every day we all encounter numerous opportunities to increase our knowledge of the world around us. Taking a couple
of minutes each day to take stock of new experiences and reflecting on those experiences can increase the rate at which we learn and remember. The way people remember is by making linkages to what they already know. When you take stock of what you've experienced, and reflect on how you can use
your experiences to improve yourself, you make those linkages. Emotions play a key role as well. If you can tie a particular emotion to your experiences, you'll have an easier time recalling them.
For the next couple of days, try to take a few minutes at the end of each day
and record what you've learned during the day. Identify how you felt and how you can use what you learned in various aspects of your life.
Ask yourself these questions:
-
What three things did I experience today and what did I learn from
them? How did I feel about each experience?
-
What am I going to do
differently in the next week because of what I learned? How do I feel
about the changes I will make?
-
What do I need to learn
more about because of what I experienced today? How does it make me
feel, now that I've learned from my experience?
Below are some examples of
how you can record what you've learned, and how you feel about each
revelation:
-
What three things did I experience today and what did I learn from
them? How did I feel about each experience?
1. I worked on using my new exchange server to send and receive e-mail
messages. I learned that it is not that easy to set up one of these
things. I felt FRUSTRATED.
2. I went out to breakfast and the waitress was just as happy as could be
showing off her pictures of her year-old grandson. Her whole world
revolved around that little boy. I think she was just about the happiest
person I've ever met. I learned to enjoy her happiness with her. I felt
great that she was so open and bubbly.
3. I took the dogs to the vet for their health certificate so that I could
take them into Canada. I didn't know that I needed a health certificate
for them until I called the vet at noon to get their shot certificates,
which the Canadian customs website said I needed. When I was at the vet, I
learned that I also have to get the USDA to sign off on the dogs' health
certificates. I felt overly burdened and empowered at the same time - now
I want to head for the border to find out the "real
story."
-
What am I going to do differently in the next week because of what I
learned? How do I feel about the changes I will make?
1. I'm going to learn more about exchange server based e-mail. I still
feel frustrated. I know it can do the things I want it to do - I just have
to figure out how.
2. I'm going to lighten up and start carrying around pictures of my
children to share with people like this waitress did. That way we can all
laugh and gush about the creations from our gene pool. This idea just
cracks me up. Basically, I'm going to find more ways to laugh about things
going on in my life instead of being so weighed down by things like my
exchange server. I feel happier already.
3. I'm going to call a vet in Buffalo, New York to get the real dish on
what I need to cross the border. I feel like Betty the bureaucracy buster.
-
What do I now realize I need to learn more about, based on what I
experienced today? How does it make me feel, now that I've learned from my
experience?
1. I need to learn more about how exchange servers work. I realize that
once I learn this the technology will change again, but at least I'll have
a stronger ability to work collaboratively with my team. My goal with
getting the exchange server was to improve collaboration with my global
team members in my company.
2. To find the humor and enjoyment in people's crazy behavior and just go
with them wherever they are in the moment. It's hard to get out of the
working "grind" mode when there seems to be so many problems to
solve.
3. I need to learn more about what it will take to get the dogs across the
border into Canada, and prepare the two animals to be strip searched. I
feel like someone in Woody Allen's movie Sleeper, who is befuddled
and pushed around by ever-changing bureaucratic laws, which probably
really make sense to someone somewhere, but make no sense to me!
By taking the time to
explore and learn from each experience within your life, you'll find that
you can improve your outlook, your situation, and your knowledge of the
world around you. Open your eyes, open your heart, and you'll be surprised
what you discover.

Cheetah
Learning hits Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia
Cheetah Learning’s newest licensee, Diane Bussey of Auckland, New Zealand, kicked off her first Cheetah Accelerator Course for the PMP® in Sydney, Australia
from June 10th through 13th at beautiful Bondi Beach. Diane scored a perfect mark, having 100% of her students pass the PMP® exam.
Diane’s next stop was Auckland, where she prepared students to sit for the last paper exam in Auckland
on June 21st. Unfortunately, PMI® has not notified the students as to whether they passed or
not, as of yet.
However, the future looks brighter for future PMP® candidates. Auckland now has a test center that will administer the PMP® exam by computer. Project Managers wishing to sit for the exam no longer have to wait for November or June to
sit. They can schedule their exam at the test center at any time. This should also mean that project managers can apply online for their eligibility at the PMI® site at
www.pmi.org. The online procedure is fast, and more importantly, easier than submitting paper. So, all you Kiwi’s interested in obtaining your PMP® certification in the most efficient manner, call Diane and find out about the next training session being held in August in Auckland.
For those in Australia, Diane is planning a session in Sydney and/or Melbourne in mid-August.
For more information about Cheetah in the Asian-Pacific area, contact Diane Bussey at

Communication
skills: Don't put off until tomorrow what you can improve today
The phone rings and you stare at it. You know it’s your customer who has a complaint because you’ve already picked up two
voicemail messages from him yesterday. You don’t have a solution to the issue and you haven’t called him back. Your heart races, your palms start to sweat, and you run out of your office telling yourself that the phone wasn’t really ringing. You swear you’ll deal with the problem first thing tomorrow morning. Sound familiar?
Problems that stagnate become larger, not smaller. A customer that waits for your return call gets aggravated, not easier to handle. Every call that you put off adds more and more stress to the project and to you personally. You can stop this cycle. The following are some guidelines for dealing with customer calls that are not pleasant.
-
Within an hour of finding out about a complaint, call the customer and confirm that you’ve received the call.
-
Verify your understanding of the problem so that you can research the correct issue.
-
Set a call back time and KEEP IT!
-
Call when you are
scheduled, even if you have to tell the customer that you haven’t resolved the problem. Let him
or her know what you have done to date.
-
Continue working closely with the customer until you get the problem resolved, and then double check with him
or her to make sure he or she accepts the solution – and get it in
writing.
Remember that 90% of a project manager’s time is spent communicating. The best communication is immediate and direct. If there is an issue, the best way to resolve it is to confront the problem. That always means making the tough phone calls as soon as possible. You’ll be nervous as you pick up that phone, but when you put it down, you’ll be on the path to solving the
problem.

Cheetah Learning has signed a training partnership licensing agreement with Mexico-based Alph Consultaria de
Proyectos, SA de CV.
Cheetah Learning CEO Michelle LaBrosse and Alpha Consultoria de Proyectos CEO Roberto Toledo recently signed the agreement at a Cheetah Learning Project Accelerator seminar held at Cheetah Learning’s Seattle Corporate Training Center. The agreement calls for Alpha Consultoria de Proyectos to provide Accelerated Project Management and Accelerated PMP® Exam Prep Training in the Mexican, Latin American,
and Caribbean markets.
LaBrosse acknowledged “the Mexican and Latin American markets are a hot bed for Accelerated Project Management and PMP® Exam Prep training. Most importantly, Alpha Consultoria de Proyectos is the type of highly respected, quality PMI® Registered training provider we want to partner with to deliver our patent pending training and methodology. “With 15 Local PMI® Chapters serving thousands of Project Managers in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, Cheetah’s expansion into this market will provide the much needed
project acceleration and exam prep training this market has been looking for.”
CEO Roberto Toledo affirmed, “Alpha Consultoria de Proyectos is very excited about the new opportunity with Cheetah Learning.
Many of Alpha’s current and past Project Management clients such as AC Nielsen, Danone Group, Kellogg, Pfizer, Roche, Telefonos de Mexico, or Xerox are perfect candidates for Cheetah’s Project Accelerator seminars.
PMI®’s presence and expansion in the Latin American and Mexican markets make Cheetah Learning’s Guaranteed Accelerated PMP® Training a welcome addition to limited PMP® Prep training opportunities for project managers across the region.”
Currently, Alpha Consultoria de Proyectos offers a variety of Project Management training seminars and consulting for Mexican subsidiaries of Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies, as well as some of the most important Mexican companies. Cheetah
in the Spotlight
Michael Bales,
International Business Development
Michael Bales has had an interesting
career, beginning with his studies in Oceanography at the University of Washington. His work experience includes
various positions, such as a door-to-door salesman, a chef, a fisherman,
and a stock broker. Michael was also the Vice President of a public company
that recycled tires into asphalt for paving roads. He worked at a couple of computer
companies, in an engineering firm promoting GIS and facilities management,
and acted as the Director of Marketing and Sales for a company that sold computer operated equipment,
which he helped design. In his pursuits, he has had a continual interest in human development, and helped
to form a company that did core value assessments over the Internet.
Michael has written industry articles, red herrings for the securities industry,
proposals for projects, and has helped with the passing of a federal law. Best known for
his warm and generous heart, he continues to support people to find their greatest level of achievement.
At Cheetah Learning, he sees to international business development. He supports
licensees and helps them
to grow their businesses and achieve their goals.
CN: Are there any special goals you'd like to accomplish in the near future?
MB: My desire is for Cheetah Learning to become successful internationally. I am surprised at the number of toolkit downloads that come from different countries around the world. What this tells me is that there is a hunger to become a recognized professional in Project Management. I would like to have licensees on every continent by the end of the year. We have several qualified people already, and I look forward to working with them to assist in establishing their business.
I find it a pleasure working with such gifted and qualified people.
CN: Are there any new realms explored by Project Management today, anything that you want to elaborate on?
MB: I have never worked in a formal Project Management environment. My business skills are based on “on the Job Training”. I have no framework for what it should look like. Instead, I have a willingness to take a risk and see what happens. Usually when I fail at one thing, I learn the key to success for my next endeavor.
I made a commitment years ago to never stop learning. It is very humbling to look foolish while I go through the steps of mastering something. I have learned that when people know themselves and have confidence in themselves, they can be open to new ideas, and
maybe - just maybe - change the way something is being done and find a better solution.
CN: What are some of the projects you've been working on?
MB: Years ago I helped develop a rubberized asphalt. We created a recipe for taking ground-up discarded rubber tires and using the material in asphalt for repaving roads. I never knew that asphalt was so technical. Each source has unique properties that make a huge difference in the final product. I always thought of asphalt repaving as something you had to endure during the summer months while traveling.
I helped develop a computerized mat cutter for the picture framing
industry - a simply x y gantry with a cutting head that rotated a blade set at 45°. This equipment revolutionized the framing industry worldwide.
I am writing a book, which is my learning project for the year. So far, I have over 30,000 words. I have done most of my research using the
Internet. I am amazed at how much information is available. My fantasy is to be on the Oprah show or have the book made into a movie. My fantasies keep me going some
days!
Last year my learning project was going through the process of filing a multi-million dollar lawsuit. I have never been involved as a litigant before and find the whole process incredible. For the most part, it’s a lot of waiting around for something to happen.
Two years ago my learning project was golf. I can now say I am a golfer. I just finished competing for the world two-man best ball championship. The winner receives an ESPY award from ESPN. Missed winning the award, but had a great time playing under pressure.
CN: When did you get interested in the work you do?
MB: When I figure it out, I will let you know. Mostly I like building things. I like the hands-on effort required to create a finished project that has a quality all its own.
CN: What is the most challenging part of your job?
MB: Working on my own. I like the interaction of people getting together to discuss a project, creating the list of to do’s, then going
out and making it happen.
CN: Would you like to improve anything about yourself in your career, or is there anything more you'd like to learn?
MB: I would like to learn another language.
CN: Is there anyone who has been a mentor to you, or someone who has influenced you?
MB: Lynn Taylor is the first person who comes to mind. Years ago, we created a company that developed speech recognition for computers. Our goal was to make the computer usable for someone who had a physical limitation and couldn’t use his or her hands to type. We
were way ahead of the technology curve on that one.
CN: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
MB: I am on my ranch in Sedona during the winter months and traveling during the summer to different countries in the world. I want to spend time on all the major continents.
CN: What do you do for escape?
MB: Golf, kayak, hike, fly-fish, or cook a superb meal for a group of friends. I also like to
do personal growth seminars.
CN: Of all your accomplishments, what makes you the proudest?
MB: Being married to my wife. It takes a lot of hard work to create a marriage that gets stronger
as the bonds of love grow. We are a great complement to each other.
CN: Is there anything you'd like to be able to do, something you've dreamed of?
MB: I would like to travel in outer space and see the earth from afar.
CN: What's most important in life?
MB: Honesty, integrity and love.

Dear Cheetah
Q: My project team
always seems to be slowed down by the enormous amount of clutter that just
seems to keep growing in our office. How can we get ourselves cleaned up?
A: As
you've obviously realized, office clutter on your desk and on your
computer slows down project work. It is also distracting and causes
multitasking.
To keep your work productive, it is a good idea to have a “5 S” event with the team, both at the beginning of the project and as part of the project status reports. A
"5 S” event is a technique adopted from the Japanese quality movement. It can be used effectively to improve white-collar productivity. The initial “5 S” event may take a half a day for
your team members to get their work spaces organized, but after that it is a simple 15-minute-a-day discipline. “5 S” is far more than simply cleaning one’s desk – it is about setting up a productive work environment with visual tools, so that people can get their work done efficiently.
The “5 S” approach stands for:
-
Sort - Only have items in your work area that you use on a daily basis. Everything else gets put away in its place. This includes sorting through electronic data and creating filing systems for quick retrieval
for both paper and electronic-based information.
-
Straighten – Have a designated place for all moveable items, such as desktop organizers. Everything is labeled in macro work areas, and there is a logical work flow for shared office machines, such as copiers.
-
Shine – Everything in the area looks like “new” condition and operates perfectly. Recycle bins and waste baskets are emptied nightly.
-
Standardize – This includes visual controls of common areas, such as how to use the copier, and wall planning calendars.
-
Sustain – Have a daily and weekly system to keep up with the improvements that you have made.
By avoiding some of these common decelerators, your team
will be ready to speed
on. Good luck!
Have a problem that needs
solving? Need some help with your most recent project? Bogged down and
burned out?
Let
the experts at Cheetah help you get things straight - write us at email@cheetahlearning.com
today, and we'll attempt to answer your question by publishing it in a future newsletter.

Featured PMP®
In each issue, Cheetah News
features a newly certified PMP®, who shares his or her ideas, insight, and
experience with potential PMP®s considering certification.
As a Project Manager
involved in Telecommunications, Kris Chute became motivated to become a certified Project Manager through
PMI® due to the fact that the PMP® certification is a very recognized and
well-respected accreditation. "By itself it won’t necessarily make you a better project manager",
Kris maintains, "but it does demonstrate that you are dedicated to becoming one."
Kris is employed in Canada, and attended one of Cheetah's Canadian
PMP® classes. He found the Cheetah Learning accelerated approach useful, and
immediately recognized Cheetah's distinct technique that holds so much
appeal to future PMP®s. "Cheetah really teaches you how to learn and how to take the
exam," Kris says. "Many courses just teach facts and data. The Cheetah approach is different in that it takes this a step further and teaches you how to compile all the facts and data and successfully take the PMP® exam."
In preparing for the exam, Kris found two things helped him the most. The first was taking the exam directly after the course.
"I was still very much in the 'exam taking mode', which I learned from the Cheetah
course," Kris says. The second thing was dedicating himself to the Cheetah course for the entire
week, including staying at the hotel and isolating himself from any other distractions
during that week.
In comparing Cheetah's course with other Project Management courses he has
taken, Kris found it " by far the most intense and enjoyable course I have taken."
In offering advice to others interested in taking the PMP® exam, Kris says
"Read the PMBOK®. Take a good exam prep course, and most importantly – relax! Yes, the exam is difficult
-- but don’t make it any harder on yourself than it needs to be."
Kris' experience with the Cheetah course was positive, and proved to be
important in all aspects of his career. "I thoroughly enjoyed the Cheetah experience,"
he avers, "and I have no doubt that I will be able to apply many of the techniques that I learned in the course to other areas of my profession aside from Project Management."
Kris Chute, PMP, is a Project Manager in the Telecommunications field. Kris has several years of
experience in telecom equipment installation projects, and also in telecom infrastructure construction projects.
