  • Cheetah Project Manager – The Right Process Then The Right People

    Choosing the right people for your projects is as important as choosing your friends.

    In many organizations, Project Managers do not have much say in the people available to work on their projects and must follow project management processes dictated by their organization. Often they neither have the right people nor the right process to generate good results with their projects. This is the reason  75% of projects fail to deliver their intended results – costing too much, taking too long and delivering too little. This is a tremendous waste of human potential, not to mention money on wasted efforts.

    Three decades ago, I learned about Nordstrom’s hiring process. They hired for friendliness because they could teach people their exceptional customer service process, but could not teach an unfriendly person how to be friendly. By having the right type of people doing their proven process, they created phenomenal long term success.

    At the same time I was learning about Nordstroms, I was also building my first home and had to work with the county building department. To say their customer service process was horrendous is an understatement. The process was so poor for everyone, even the friendliest person, would become surly in short order. They quickly turned the right people into terrible performers – just like many overly complicated project management processes do.

    The lesson I learned was with the right people in the right process, consistent success is inevitable, but you need both.
